Spine Diseases

Sciatica

Sciatica is a term used to describe nerve pain in the leg that is caused by irritation and/or compression of the sciatic nerve. Sciatica originates in the lower back, radiates deep into the buttock, and travels down the leg.

Causes:
Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes pinched, usually by a herniated disk in your spine or by an overgrowth of bone (bone spur) on your vertebrae.

Lumbar Spondylosis

Lumbar spondylosis is an age-related degeneration of the vertebrae and disks of the lower back. These changes are often called degenerative disk disease and osteoarthritis.

Causes:
Spondylosis is caused by wear-and-tear on the components of the spine. The major risk factor for developing spondylosis is age.

Bulging Disc

Bulging disc is a condition in which the nucleus (inner portion) of a spinal disc remains contained within the annulus fibrosus (outer portion), unlike a herniated disc in which the nucleus leaks out of the disc.

Causes:
Bulging disc occurs when the nucleus shifts to press against the disc's outer ring, causing the disc to flatten and protrude into the spinal canal. Age-related wear-and-tear on the spine is the most common cause of a bulging disc.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis, sometimes called OA, is a type of arthritis that only affects the joints, usually in the hands, knees, hips, neck, and lower back.

Causes:
People who have had a broken bone near a joint are prone to develop osteoarthritis in that joint. Joint overuse.

Neck Pain

Neck pain is discomfort in any of the structures in the neck. These include the muscles, nerves, bones (vertebrae), joints, and the discs between the bones.

Causes:
Common causes include osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, herniated disc, pinched nerve, mental and physical stress and strain, poor posture, tumors and other health conditions.

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Lumbar spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower part of your back. Stenosis, which means narrowing, can cause pressure on your spinal cord or the nerves that go from your spinal cord to your muscles. Spinal stenosis can happen in any part of your spine but is most common in the lower back.

Causes:
Lumbar Spinal stenosis is most commonly caused by wear-and-tear changes in the spine related to osteoarthritis. In severe cases of spinal stenosis, doctors may recommend surgery to create additional space for the spinal cord or nerves.

Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is defined as pain and discomfort, localised below the costal margin and above the inferior gluteal folds, with or without leg pain.

Causes:
The most common causes of lower back pain include:

1) Muscle or Spinal Ligament Strain.
2) A Ruptured or Bulging Disc.
3) Scoliosis.
4) Osteoarthritis.
5) Osteoporosis

Rheumatoid Arthritis

An autoimmune disease that causes pain, swelling, and stiffness in the joints, and may cause severe joint damage, loss of function, and disability. The disease may last from months to a lifetime, and symptoms may improve and worsen over time.

Causes:
The exact cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown. Researchers think it's caused by a combination of genetics, hormones and environmental factors.

Cervical Spondylosis

Cervical spondylosis is a general term for age-related wear-and-tear affecting the spinal disks in your neck. As the disks dehydrate and shrink, signs of osteoarthritis develop, including bony projections along the edges of bones (bone spurs).

Causes:
Cervical Spondylosis is caused by wear-and-tear on the components of the spine.

Degenerative Disc

Degenerative disk disease is when your spinal discs wear down. Spinal disks are rubbery cushions between your vertebrae (bones in your spinal column). They act as shock absorbers and help you move, bend and twist comfortably. Everyone's spinal disks degenerate over time and is a normal part of aging.

Causes:
Degeneration occurs because of age-related wear-and-tear on a spinal disc, and may be accelerated by injury, health and lifestyle factors, and possibly by genetic predisposition to joint pain or musculoskeletal disorders.

Herniated Discs

A herniated disc refers to a problem with one of the rubbery cushions (disks) that sit between the bones (vertebrae) that stack to make your spine.

Causes:
Aging, damage from an injury or surgery, lifting heavy weights, chronic coughing, pregnancy, especially having multiple pregnancies.

Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of arthritis that causes lower back pain.

Causes:
Ankylosing spondylitis has no known specific cause, though genetic factors seem to be involved. In particular, people who have a gene called HLA-B27 are at a greatly increased risk of developing ankylosing spondylitis.
